What a receipt should include
A receipt is proof that money changed hands. It is issued after payment, which is what makes it different from an invoice. A complete receipt shows:
- The word “Receipt” and a unique receipt number
- Who received the payment and who paid
- The date the payment was made
- The payment method (cash, card, or bank transfer)
- A description of what was paid for
- The total amount received

A rent receipt is the most common receipt tenants ask for, and landlords are often legally required to provide one. To make a rent receipt above, put the tenant as the payer, yourself or your agency as the recipient, and the rental period and property in the description line, for example “Rent for March 2026, 12 High Street”.
