VAT, GST and sales tax: the same maths
VAT (value-added tax), GST (goods and services tax) and sales tax are all consumption taxes on what you sell. The names and rules vary by country, but the arithmetic for adding or removing them is identical. VAT and GST are collected at each stage of the supply chain, with registered businesses reclaiming the tax on their inputs. US sales tax is charged once, at the final sale, and is set by each state and locality rather than nationally. Whichever applies to you, this calculator handles it: choose the rate and the direction.
How to add tax to a price
To add tax, multiply the net (pre-tax) price by the rate, then add it on:
gross = net + tax
A £100 service at 20% VAT: the tax is £100 × 0.20 = £20, so the invoice total is £120. Set the calculator to Add tax, enter 100 and 20, and you get the same figures instantly.
How to remove tax (reverse VAT)
When a price already includes tax and you need the net figure, divide by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. Do not simply take the percentage off the total, that gives the wrong answer, because the tax was added to the net price, not the gross one.
tax = gross − net
A £120 total that includes 20% VAT breaks down to £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net and £20 VAT. Set the calculator to Remove tax and it reverses any rate for you.
Standard VAT and GST rates by country
These are the standard national rates. Many countries also run reduced or zero rates for things like food, books, children’s clothing and energy, so check the specific category if your supply is not standard-rated. Rates last reviewed September 2026.

US sales tax is different
The United States has no national VAT. Sales tax is set by each state, and a county or city often adds more on top, so the combined rate depends on where the sale happens. Below are representative combined rates; always confirm the exact figure for your city and county, then enter it in the calculator.
| State | Approx. combined rate |
|---|---|
| California | 8.85% |
| Texas | 8.2% |
| New York | 8.53% |
| Florida | 7% |
| Illinois | 8.85% |
| Washington | 9.4% |
| Colorado | 7.8% |
| Arizona | 8.4% |
| Oregon | No sales tax |
| Delaware | No sales tax |
| Montana | No sales tax |
| New Hampshire | No sales tax |

Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT or GST to a price?
Multiply the net price by the tax rate to get the tax amount, then add it on. For example, £100 plus 20% VAT is £100 × 0.20 = £20 tax, giving £120 including VAT. Set the calculator to 'Add tax', enter the net amount and the rate, and it does this for you.
How do I remove VAT from a total (reverse VAT)?
Divide the gross, tax-inclusive amount by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 20% VAT, divide the total by 1.20 to get the net price; the difference is the VAT. For example, £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, so the VAT is £20. Set the calculator to 'Remove tax' to do this automatically.
What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?
They are all consumption taxes on goods and services, but applied differently. VAT (value-added tax) and GST (goods and services tax) are charged at each stage of the supply chain, with businesses reclaiming the tax they pay on inputs; the names differ mostly by country. US sales tax is charged only once, at the final sale to the consumer, and is set by each state and locality rather than nationally. The maths for adding or removing them is the same.
Why is the reverse-VAT amount not just the rate off the total?
Because the tax was added to the net price, not the gross. Taking 20% off a £120 gross figure would give £96, which is wrong. The VAT is 20% of the £100 net, which is £20, so the net is £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100. Always divide by 1 plus the rate to reverse it correctly.
Does US sales tax work the same way?
The calculation is identical, but the rate is not national. US sales tax is set by each state, and often a county or city adds more on top, so combined rates range from 0% in states like Oregon and Delaware to over 10% in some areas. Enter the exact combined rate for the buyer's location rather than a single country figure.
